I’m still unclear as to what really happened with the young man in Jaipur. His diary entries during this period were very sketchy, as if he was preoccupied with something. In fact, some of the entries almost gave an impression that he was quite relaxed and perhaps was even considering a life with Sulekha. I remember one entry in particular which went as far as to declare that for the first time in his life he felt a strange emotion that he could not understand. He felt a yearning for Sulekha that was quite different from what he had felt for his aunt. In his own words, this feeling was pure and genuine.
But, suddenly all entries dried up. Quite a few pages are left blank. The blanking out coincided with the Mumbai Minute article which had raised the question on whether he was out of Mumbai's hair and had become Jaipur's problem. As I stared at the white blank pages, I suddenly felt that these were the most important pages in his diary. This was the moment that he had considered giving up his ways and perhaps disappearing into oblivion with Sulekha Sachdev.
I was wrong. As I read the entries a few pages later, I realised that the blank white pages were akin to the white heat that had engulfed his brain as a fire raged within, sparked off by my offhand comments on the TV show and as well as the Mumbai Minute article.
While Sulekha was engrossed in a meeting, the young man had taken an autorickshaw and gone into the city. Over the next few days, he made a few more trips and by the end of the week, he had got himself a shiny new driving licence in the name of Rajan Saxena. He rented a small barsati in the same name, introducing himself as a travelling salesman for a chemical manufacturing company. With these papers he also opened an account in a nationalised bank.
While it seemed as if he was getting ready to settle down in Jaipur, I knew what had happened next and I felt a gnawing in my insides knowing that we had been so close to him giving up his killing ways. I regretted the fact that I had allowed myself to be led by the TV anchor into ranking the Mundi-Cut Killer. That bruised the young man's ego and led to him calling me, which in turn led to the Mumbai Minute article. How I wished to God that we would have all kept quiet and let him disappear silently into the night. Yet, I also realised that it was in his nature to kill and sooner or later his natural instinct would take over him and he would strike out without caring whether it was at a loved one or not.
Two years later, a goatherd who was illegally grazing his flock near Sattasar village in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan, made a discovery.
The goatherd had with him his pet, Bully Kutta,
